I bought a plastic spout from a home improvement store, mounted it with hot glue on a square piece of 2 x 4, and screwed on 4 plastic chair caps for legs. Place it in a small see through container. Attach a piece of clear tread or lightweight fishing line to a spider. My spider was a spider ring. The legs were pretty long so I trimmed them so my spider would look smaller. Drill a hole in the top of the spout.

Your new spider puppet can crawl up the spout as everyone sings the “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” Pour water down the spout to wash your spider out!
Rachel Sumnertag:rachelsumner.com,2005:Post/70943832022-11-24T06:00:00-06:002023-04-18T01:16:47-05:00Entertain your Thanksgiving guests learn to play wooden spoons
<shape alt="" id="_x0000_s1026" stroked="f" style="position:absolute; left:0; text-align:left; margin-left:-9px; margin-top:-8px; width:108.6pt; height:109.4pt; text-indent:0; z-index:251660800; v-text-anchor:top" type="#_x0000_t202"></shape>
I love homemade and found instruments. You can make jingle bell bracelets with pipe cleaners, put jingle bells inside a container with a lid, make a jingle bell necklace with string or ribbon, or attach jingle bells to large paper clips. Here is one idea! Join me on Thanksgiving morning at 10:00 a.m. CST for a live virtual concert. We will sing and shake a tail feather together to "The Turkey Trot" and "The Turkey Pokey." You'll find the concert on my Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/RachelForKids

Here are a few more ideas:

1. Celebrate with the people you live with and plan events in the day to make it fun: watch the parades, sports, play games, plan a virtual visit with friends or family.

2. Coordinate your dinner time with family and friends and dine together virtually.

3. Plan a Thanksgiving walk or a hike in your area.

4. If there is no risk of fires in your community, gather in the evening for a Thanksgiving bonfire.

5. Have a small outdoor meal with family and friends. Limit the number of guests.

6. Write letters of gratitude to others and mail them on Friday.

If you do spend time with people who do not live with you, keep the number of people small, wear a mask, and stay 6 feet apart.

I used an old walker, black duct tape, and a 7 1/2 foot PVC pipe that is 2 inches wide. These were all things I had around the house. 2 inches wide works for smaller candy but I would suggested at least a 3 inch wide PVC pipe if you have a choice. I posted an invitation to families on our neighborhood Facebook page. It sounds as if there are a few other neighbors with candy chutes and others who are setting up tables at the end of their driveways with plastic bags that children can pick up.

This year, I have decided to distribute candy in a safe and non-traditional way. I'm making a seven and a half foot candy chute (some people call it a candy slide). I wish I thought of this myself but I believe that a dad in Ohio was the first to think of this idea and publicize it. He used a six-foot by four-inch cardboard shipping tube and decorated it.

I want something more heavy-duty and weatherproof so my candy chute will be made out of PVC piping. The diameter depends on the size of the candy you are going to put down the chute. It needs to be wide enough for the candy to easily drop through the tube. Mine is two inches in diameter.

Here are my ideas on precautions to consider to help keep everyone safe:

1. Set up your candy chute or slide outdoors and be sure it is over six feet long (just to be sure).

2. Be sure that trick-or-treaters cannot approach you at the top of the chute. I'm going to create a physical barrier by using yellow caution tape. I plan to be at the top of our front porch either just inside our door or out on the porch. The children will be at the bottom of my steps on the sidewalk. I will encourage the kids to place their bag or container underneath the bottom of my chute one at a time. (No crowding allowed.)

3. Wear a mask.

4. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before touching any individual candy and wipe down the top and bottom of your candy chute after setting it up. Place your candy in a large clean container so it will be ready to distribute it easily. If you touch anything that has not been cleaned between candy drops, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Gloves are not really helpful because if you touch your face or any unclean surface, you should change your gloves. Just clean your hands.

I've posted a picture of a super duper long candy chute I saw near our neighborhood. It is clipped to their gutter near the top of their front porch. My candy chute is not going to be as fancy as theirs but it will still create excitement and fun for trick-or-treaters! I've been experimenting with how I will set up my candy shute. Right now, I planning on attaching my chute to an old walker with duct tape. I'll let you know how my experiment is working and post a picture!

Taking martial arts classes can be a good way for kids to blow off some steam. Martial arts instruction can also help kids focus and build self-esteem. If kids are used to experiencing these benefits of taking regular classes, dealing with COVID-19 studio closures can be especially difficult. They may struggle to focus on homeschool assignments or they may have a hard time avoiding the boredom that can lead to bad behavior.

All of this can lead to more tension for already stressed parents, but children don’t have to live without the benefits of martial arts just because they are stuck at home. With a few helpful resources and pointers, parents can set up a space in their home so that kids can continue to practice their martial arts while COVID-19 closings are still in place.

Why Should Students Practice at Home?
Training at home can never replace the guided direction of an instructor, but a home practice can help keep kids engaged and interested.

● The benefits of martial arts classes are countless but kids can miss out on these perks when studios are closed.
● A home martial arts practice is a good way to keep kids occupied and entertained while parents work from home.
● Staying physically active is essential for the health and well-being of all children.
● Martial arts, including kickboxing, can provide health benefits for parents as well.

How Should Parents Set Up a Studio?
Parents may be hesitant to dedicate an entire room in their home to martial arts but that practice space can also be used for other purposes.

● A multi-purpose or flex room can be a major attraction for potential home buyers.
● If parents want to maximize home value, they should consider using high-quality materials in their martial arts/multipurpose room.
● Converting a spare bedroom is a simple way to carve out space for a multipurpose martial arts practice space.

How Can Kids Practice Safely at Home?
Safety is always a top focus for parents, but keeping children healthy and safe while they practice martial arts at home can be pretty simple.

● Since falls can and will happen, installing rubber flooring can be helpful for preventing serious injuries.
● Children can also avoid injury by following along with online videos and classes, including YouTube taekwondo channels.
● Keeping some first-aid supplies handy, including hot/cold packs, can also be helpful.

What Equipment Will Students Need at Home?
Investing in rubber floors is a good idea for preventing bruises and more serious injuries but there are a few other pieces of equipment parents may want to pick up.

● For children who will be sparring, a head guard can reduce the risk of concussions.
● Boxing gloves can shield hands from potential pain and injury
● Adding a punching bag can help kids practice punches and kicks safely.
● Buying budget-friendly workout gear from stores like Old Navy can help keep kids comfy and cool while they practice martial arts at home. Additionally, you can save money on these purchases by looking for online Old Navy cash back deals.

Taking martial arts classes from a trained instructor is the best way for your children to benefit from their practice. When those studios are closed, having a home studio set up can at least keep kids interested in martial arts, but it can also help keep them active. Kids can also continue to practice at home when classes resume, and with that extra practice, they will gain more skill.

Presentation Title: Win Their Attention: Performing Arts Techniques to Invigorate Your Classroom Teaching

In this workshop, teachers will learn how to use performing arts strategies to catch the attention of students and keep them engaged. Straightforward techniques from theater, music, and dance address multiple learning styles, infuse a sense of play into new topics and skills, and enhance student recall. Through demonstration and interactive experiences, the presenter will illustrate how these arts integration methods can be easily adapted into the fabric of a teacher’s daily practice. The group will explore a “performing arts toolbox” for early childhood educators that includes: comedy set-ups, simple and complex props, theatrical surprise, innovative music elements, and adult-friendly movement. Teachers will learn to add specific elements from the performing arts world to augment lesson planning in practical and customizable ways.
Rachel Sumnertag:rachelsumner.com,2005:Post/60437302019-07-27T19:00:00-05:002021-09-14T11:08:38-05:00Come to the last Dance Party of the summer!
Put on your dancing shoes and come to the Bellevue Public Library at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday August 6, 2019. Their caterpillars need milkweed plants to live. The fall is the perfect time to plant milkweed. There are four different species of native Milkweed— the Whorled, Common and Swamp Milkweeds, as well as Butterfly Weed (also a milkweed)— are found in most states from the eastern seaboard to the Rocky Mountains as well as in southern Canada, and will thrive in a wide range of garden and meadow habitats.

How to plant milkweed seeds in the fall from American Meadows:
If you want to start milkweeds from seed, the easiest way is to emulate Mother Nature and plant them in the fall! In the wild, milkweed plants scatter their seeds quite late in the season—at a time when the coming cold would kill any seedlings that germinated right away. But the seeds of milkweed (and other plants that flower late in the season) are cleverly programmed to delay their germination until after they have been exposed to winter’s cold followed by gradually rising temperatures in springtime—an adaptation known as stratification.

Plus excellent for English language learners
If you are looking for songs to help children learn to read and count, here is a recording that I made especially for a dear friend who owned a Kumon school. Her Kumon school used this recording with the young children who came for tutoring. The original and traditional songs are also excellent for English language learners! You will find traditional songs that children in the United States learn like "London Bridges," "Old MacDonald," "Twinkle, Twinkle," "Pat-a-cake," and more.

Teachers and parents from around the world have enjoyed singing the chorus of this song and having children look outside to identify the weather. Then everyone can sing the verse that describes the weather they see outside.
